Disease: E. granulosus: Cystic Echinococcosis (Cystic Hydatid Disease, CHD) E. multilocularis: Alveolar Echinococcosis (Alveolar Hydatid Disease, AHD)
Symptoms: (Depends on localization size, and number of cysts) Liver: Upper abdominal pain, hepatomegaly, cholestasis, jaundice, etc. Lungs: Thoracic pains, cough, expectoration, dyspnea, etc. CNS: Neurological symptoms
Mechanism of Infection: Hand-to-mouth transmission. Infection by oral uptake of eggs. e.g.: contaminated wild berries.
