Disease: Lymphatic filariasis; Subcutaneous filariasis (Loiasis; Streptocerciasis; Onchocerciasis); Serous cavity filariasis (Perstans filariasis)
Symptoms: Recurring lymphadenitis, Fever, Disfigurement of the limbs (elephantiasis) and genitalia (hydroceles and other anatomical changes in the male genitalia) by worms occupying the lymphatic system. Calabar swellings (transient localized angioedema) and subconjunctival migration of the worm (eye worm); chronic, pruritic dermatitis and lymphadenopathy; dermatitis, keratitis, chorioretinitis, blindness (river blindness). Transient angioedema, pruritus of arms, face and other parts of the body, fever, headache, arthralgias; M. ozzardi infections are usually asymptomatic
Mechanism of Infection: Mosquito vectors include Mansonia, Anopheles, and Aedes mosquitoes. Female black fly of the genus Simulium. Blood-sucking flies called midges (Culicoides grahami and C. austeni)
